692 Newsome & Co., Coventry, Movement No. 152997, 54 mm, 164 g, circa 1904 An almost as new, heavy precision pocket watch with one-minute tourbillon of Type “Nielsen I” and spring detent escapement Case: 18k gold, tiered, polished, gold dome, case maker’s punch mark “WS” (William Sexton, Coventry). Dial: enamel, off-white, radial Roman hours, auxiliary seconds, signed, blued spade hands. Movm.: 2/3 plate movement, frosted, gilt, screwed chatons, mirror polished chatoned steel bridge for cage, finest mirror polished tourbillon steel cage, spring detent escapement with steel escape wheel, large gold and platinum screws compensation balance. According to the current state of research there is only one other tourbillon produced by Newsome. The design of this movement and in particular the tourbillon itself closely resembles that of a tourbillon by Dent and one can assume that both pieces were completed by Nicole Nielsen at 14 Soho Square, London (using tourbillons bought in Switzerland) and delivered to Newsome and Dent. Newsome & Co. The company Newsome & Co. was called Newsome & Yeomans until 1879 and had premises in Spon Street in Coventry. After the partnership was dissolved, Isaac Jabez Newsome moved to 14 & 15 Butts in Coventry. He described himself as maker of watches and chronometers and had a branch at 94 Hatton Garden, EC in London. His son Samuel Theo Newsome later became director of S.H. Newsome Ltd. Watch Manufacturers of Coventry and was also the proprietor of the Hippodrome Music Hall in Coventry. He died on January 4, 1930 at the age of 61.
