Lot 50

Geneva, 35 x 30 mm, 26 g, circa 1810
An exquisite gold and enamel pendant watch studded with tiny half pearls: "Love conquers Evil" - we know of no other watch like it.
Case: gold, polychrome enamel and half pearls. Dial: enamel. Movm.: full plate movement, chain/fusee, verge escapement, three-arm brass balance.
On one side, the watch takes its shape from the stylized outline of a sperm whale, while when the watch is turned over the onlooker sees the outline of a small ship. Both sides are ornamented with splendid enamel painting. The front, in rather dark colours, shows the picture of a whale as a symbol of evil; on its back it carries one of the Erotes, who is holding a twisted conch shell, the attribute of Triton. The lighter-coloured backside is decorated with a small boat made of engraved gold; sailing in it is a winged putto with his quiver and the arrows of love - he represents goodness and love.
