A rare small ship's chronometer with 49h power reserve and auxiliary compensation balance
Case: mahogany. Dial: silvered. Movm.: brass movement, 72 mm, chain/fusee, spring detent escapement according to Thomas Earnshaw, bimetallic chronometer balance with 4 weights and 4 screws.
Auguste Louis Berthoud (1828-1910) was the grandson of famous maker Louis Berthoud; he continued the family tradition of chronometer making and created this marvellous treasure with its charmingly aged dial and the striking balance with different size, trapeze-shaped weights and the steel arm of the additional compensation.
Messageries Maritimes was a French shipping company based in Paris, with Marseille the home port of the ships. The company ran regular passenger services to the Far East, India, Australia and New Zealand; together with the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique it was the most important shipping company in France.
