Abraham-Louis Breguet, Paris, Breguet No. B1004, Tavernier Nr. 1779, 56 mm, 143 g, circa 1802
An important pocket watch in a Tavernier case, with quarter repeater. According to the original Breguet documents, Abraham Louis Breguet’s employee Monsieur Charot sold this watch on Prairial 22, an 10 (June 10, 1802) to Monsieur Castaneda for 1,410 francs. The production costs came to 1,079 francs - with copy of the Breguet records
Case: 20K gold, case design "collier" by Pierre- Benjamin Tavernier, polished, pusher for repetition via pendant, case maker's punch mark "PBT" (Pierre- Benjamin Tavernier). Dial: enamel, rear signed "Borel 73", Arabic Breguet numerals, signed Breguet, additional secret signature below "12": "No. 1004 Breguet", Breguet hands. Movm.: bridge movement, keywind, gilt, 2 hammers / 2 gongs, standing barrel, ruby cylinder, shock protection-"parachute", ruby cylinder escapement, three-arm brass balance, blued balance spring with bimetallic compensation curb on the index.
The name of Castaneda comes up in Abraham-Louis Breguet’s correspondence and appears frequently among the buyers in Breguet’s sales ledgers. As is explained by Emmanuel Breguet in his book, "Breguet Horloger depuis 1775", Mr. Castaneda was one of the couriers. These were specialized companies handling commercial transactions as well as the transport of merchandise, in this case between France and Spain. Mr. Castaneda must therefore have been a Spanish businessman who traveled regularly to France, liaising with important Spanish clients, and particularly the Spanish royal court.
