Lot 380

Rolex "Cosmograph Daytona" - so called "Paul Newman Daytona", Case No. 1658457, Ref. 6240, Cal. 722-1, 37 mm, circa 1967
A highly attractive Rolex "cult" timekeeper with "Paul Newman Exotic Dial" - an early "COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA" version
Case: steel, screw back ref. 6240, black bezel with tachy scale, screwed "Triplock" winding crown, screwed MKII chronograph pushers, steel "Oyster" bracelet ref. 78350/19 with endlinks stamped 557, original plexi watch glass with signs of wear. Dial: extremely well preserved Paul Newman dial in correct 3c step-dial execution; silvered and engine- turned subsidiary dials, red minutes track, 12h counter with red Daytona lettering above.
A typical feature of the early reference 6240 in its original condition are, among other things, the different hands in the subsidiary dials; our model is an excellent example of this because it has a "needle hand" in the left sub dial, while the right sub dial has an "arrow hand".
Reference 6240 was the first "Oyster Cosmograph" model Rolex ever produced. The characteristic features of the model which was only produced for a short time in the late 1960 were the screw down push buttons. The reference was quickly replaced by the better known references 6263 and 6265.
