An ornamental George III quarter repeating mantel clock with carillon, quarter hour / hour strike and date indicator
Case: wood, gilt base. Dial: silvered. Movm.: rectangular brass full plate movement, signed, 9 hammers / 9 bells, 2 barrels, 3 x chain/fusee for going and striking train, verge escapement, pendulum spring suspension, brass pendulum.
Paul Rimbault and his brother Stephen (active 1744-88) were famous clockmakers of Huguenot descent and known for their table clocks with carillon and musical movements. Table clocks by Paul Rimbault hardly ever come on the market.
The silvered dial is surrounded by applied gilt foliage scrolls and the levers for turning off the strike and for fine regulation are exquisitely engraved. The melodious chimes plays various tunes on 8 bells at the quarter hours.
