Lot 608

Roggen à Paris, Height 600 mm, circa 1780
An exquisite Directoire mantel clock with half hour / hour self strike
Case: firegilt bronze and white marble. Dial: enamel, centre seconds, signed "Coteau". Movm.: circular brass full plate movement, 2 barrels, 1 hammer / 1 bell, knife edge suspension, steel/brass/gridiron pendulum with fine adjusting screw.
According to Tardy, Louis Antoine Roggen became a master in 1784 and worked from 1789 to 1790 in Paris, first at the Place de l'Ecole and later in the Rue des Prêtres. He died at the age of 56 in the year VII (1799).
The case of this clock has been elaborately decorated with beautiful firegilt applications; the dial is finely ornamented with stones on the minute ring. The movement is peculiar in its unusual arrangement of the lever escapement: the central second is mounted directly on the anchor wheel, so that the anchor itself also sits almost in the centre of the movement. The heavy gridiron pendulum is held by a solid, flexible suspension. The white enamel dial bears the signature "Coteau" and has Roman hours, a minute ring and an Arabic 5-minute display. Coteau is famous for his outstanding enamel and porcelain painting - he probably created the most important and precise dials of his time.
