Lot 365

Rolex "Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master Superlative Chronometer officially certified", Case No. 1597077, Ref. 1675, 39 mm, circa 1967
A rare vintage automatic wristwatch with "Nipple Dial", date and 24h indicator on the bezel, so called "Concorde" - with original box
Case: 18k rose gold, screw back, turnable bezel with 24h indicator, screwed "Twinlock" winding crown, 18k gold riveted "Oyster" bracelet with endlinks stamped 80. Dial: brown, applied luminous gold round, triangular and baton indexes ("Nipple Dial"), "Concorde" tritium hands.
The watch has a marvellous brown nipple dial with matching brown bezel, which, together with the rose gold case creates a warm and harmonious appeal. The straight hands are a rare and highly sought-after feature of this reference and striking in their simplicity. Around 1969 Rolex launched a series of advertisements with the motto "If you were flying the Concorde, you'd wear a Rolex", which showed a gold reference 1675 with straight hands. Collectors of unusual Rolex watches have accordingly taken to calling this rare and striking variant the Concorde.
"Nipple Dials"
Introduced first on the gold GMT 6542 in 1959, this model was fitted with a special type of index. Instead of just being a dot of radium for the luminescence, the designers came up with with a gold thick base that would surround the radium. They became known to collectors as "nipple dials".
