Lot 261

Breguet No. 2844, Movement No. 2844 815, Height 145 mm, circa 1878
A fine hour repeating carriage clock with half hour / hour self strike and alarm - sold on April 20th, 1878 for 300 Francs to Prince d'Hénin - with original leather box, key and Breguet certificate no. 4472
Case: bronze, gilt. Dial: enamel. Movm.: brass movement, 2 hammers / 1 gong, 3 barrels for going train, hour strike and alarm, platform with lateral lever escapement.
The Hénins were a family of Belgian, French and Dutch nobility, tracing their line back to 1187. The family name refers to the fiefdom of Hénin in the current Département Pas-de-Calais, even though this fiefdom was inherited and remained the property of the family for only 15 years (1229–1244).
The watch was presumably bought by Thierry Armand Baudouin Laurent († 1934), Comte d’Alsace, Prince de Hénin from the line of Cuvilliers-Fosseux (Pas de Calais) who took the name Hénin-Liétard d'Alsace in the 17th century and later adopted the title of Comte or Marquis d’Alsace; the line died out in 1960.
