Lot 235

"S&D" (Sené & Détalla à Genève), 68 x 21 mm, 73 g, circa 1800
An exquisite gold enamel bonbonnière "Peace Bringing Back Abundance"
Case: 18K gold, makers' mark "S&D" (Sené & Détalla), Geneva, two later gold punch marks Paris 1838-1846.
Circular, sides and base engine-turned with a geometric pattern and translucent cobalt blue enamelling. Champlevè borders of black, white and blue enamel on the lid, the sides and the base. The independent cover shows an exquisite polychrome miniature painting of the allegory "Peace Bringing Back Abundance", after an oil painting created by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (1755-1842) in 1780.
The partnership of Geneva goldsmiths Philippe Sené and Détalla must have existed before 1795 and was most likely disolved in 1805; in 1798 Sené had formed a partnership with his brother-in-law Henry Neisser, who had moved from Hanau to Geneva in 1783 and the company was renamed to Sené & Neisser in October 1805. Philippe Sené died in November 1807 and in 1808 Neisser registered his own master’s mark.
