Lot 12

Attributed to Jean Delacombes, Geneva, 55 x 31 mm, 39 g, circa 1640
A single hand Renaissance rock crystal crucifix pendant watch. This is only the second crucifix pendant watch of such a small size we have ever come across. A nearly identical watch with the same movement and dial ornamentation by Geneva maker Jean Delacombes is part of a German collection; the cut of the rock crystal lids is also identical. This watch was sold by Antiquorum on April 18, 1998 for CHF 97,000 (lot 176).
Case: in the form of a crucifix, folding bevelled rock crystal parts mounted in a firegilt carved frame. Dial: brass, firegilt, silver chapter ring. Movm.: cruciform brass full plate movement, verge escapement, applied floral decorations, gut/fusee, ratchet wheel set up with blued steel spring, two-arm iron balance without spring, florally engraved pierced balance cock.
A striking rock crystal watch in excellent, original condition and of a very small size. The case is made of bevelled rock crystal mounted in gilt-brass. The dial is decorated with a peacock and exquisitely engraved summer flowers. The centre shows a lakeside farm building. The fittings on the inside of the rock crystal lids are also lavishly ornamented.
