Lot 224

L. & E. Duchene, Geneva, Case No. 88831, 48 mm, 86 g, circa 1830
An exquisite half pearl-set Swiss gold enamel pocket watch with turnable case - so called "Cabriolet" - wearable as a lepine or as hunting cased watch
Case: 18k gold, enamel, split pearls. Dial: enamel. Movm.: bridge movement, keywind, side lever escapement, gold ring balance.
This pocket watch is particularly impressive because of its two strikingly beautiful cases. Both have been decorated with translucent cobalt blue enamel on an engine-turned wave pattern and are studded with different size half pearls in the form of flowers.
The company Duchêne was founded by Louis Duchêne (1730-1804) in Geneva around 1750. The company signed its products with Duchêne & Cie. from 1770 until 1790; in 1791 the company name changed to Louis Duchêne & Fils and traded under that name until 1820. The two sons of Louis Duchêne, Jacob Louis Duchêne (1751-1800) and Jacob Etienne Duchêne (1759-1840) were partners in the firm. Watches by Duchêne carry varying signatures on the dials, cases and movements.
