Lot 170

Thomas Gray, Sackville Street, Movement No. 2034, 47 mm, 91 g, circa 1800
An ornamental gold enamel verge pocket watch for the Ottoman market
Case: gold, enamel, half pearls. Dial: enamel. Movm.: full plate movement, chain/fusee, three-arm brass balance.
A fetching case back intricately decorated with engine-turned zig-zag pattern and translucent red enamelling; red enamel bezels studded with half pearls.
The first record of Thomas Gray is found in 1786 in an invoice at Windsor Castle; between 1789 and 1793 he is listed in the London directory as working as a "Jeweller, Sword-Cutler & Maker of Fancy Articles" at 41 and 42 Sackville Street. The Royal Collection at Windsor Castle holds some fine swords made by Gray; however, the watch at hand shows that Gray was not only a highly skilled maker of swords but also a retailer of fine English watches.
