Pascal Hubert à Rouen, 58 mm, 190 g, circa 1700
A lavishly decorated verge pocket watch "Oignon" with quarter repeater
Case: silver, lavishly engraved, rear bell. Dial: enamel. Movm.: full plate movement, chain/fusee, ratchet wheel set up with blued steel spring, 1 hammer, balance with "mock pendulum", fine florally engraved balance bridge.
The back is decorated with two oval medallions with engraved, facing profile portraits of a noble gentleman and a fine lady. A crown is engraved above the portraits, while a pair of billing doves sits below them. On both front and back of the watch the rim is intricately engraved with volutes, petals and acanthus. It is likely that this timepiece was a wedding present.
French watchmaker Pascal Hubert was born around 1625 and according to Tardy he became a master in 1649. He worked with Jacques Gloria Sen., who was one of the first makers to create watches without fusee. Hubert died probably circa 1701.
