Lot 378

La Maisonnette, Le Locle / Paul Matthey-Doret, Case No. 62387, 57 mm, 131 g, circa 1880
A large and heavy gold minute repeating hunting case pocket watch with chronograph - with original wooden box
Case: 18k gold. Dial: enamel. Movm.: bridge movement, 2 hammers / 2 gongs, gold screw compensation balance.
A beautiful and complicated movement in marvellous condition and with some rather extravagant elements. Particularly unusual is the fine adjustment mechanism with a curved threaded rod with two nuts for moving and locking the hand. The repeater has a clear, resonant sound.
Paul Matthey-Doret was born in 1837. He founded the watch and clock manufactory "La Maisonnette" in Le Locle, which his wife Anna Matthey-Doret (1847-1907) continued to run after his death in 1898. The brand La Maisonnette was eventually bought by Byron L. Strassburger & Co. in New York.
