John Pepys, London, 55 mm, 170 g, circa 1685
An early pair-cased verge clockwatch with hour self strike and silver Champlevé dial of high quality
Case: silver, case maker's punch mark "WS" below a coronet (probably William Sherwood), rear bell. Dial: silver. Movm.: full plate movement, keywind, chain/fusee, 1 hammer, steel balance.
John Pepys was apprenticed in 1708, Free of the Clockmakers' Company from 1715 and "master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers" from 1739 until 1748. He worked in Fleet Street under "Crown and Sceptre".

The outer is most probably a replacement made for the watch early in its life by William Sherwood who was favoured by Thomas Tompion.
