"Accumulatoren Fabrik Aktiengesellschaft Berlin-Hagen (AFA) "
From 1922 on Guenther Quandt and August Rosterg got more and more involved in the potash industry, with a particular interest in the company Wintershall AG (founded in 1921). Quandt also managed to obtain the majority of shares in the "Accumulatoren Fabrik Aktiengesellschaft Berlin-Hagen (AFA)", which was the largest producer of batteries and accumulators in Europe at the time and supplied battery installations for submarines. In 1958 AFA in Berlin was renamed to "VEB Berliner Akkumulatoren- und Elementefabrik", in 1962 the factory in Hagen was renamed to "VARTA Batterie AG".
