"NS" (Nikolaus Schmidt the Younger), Augsburg, Height 295 mm, circa 1630

An important self striking crucifix clock with stackfreed
Case: copper, firegilt; moulded, round base with floral engravings on 3 bun feet, rear bell; applied statuette of Christ on the cross, flanked by Maria and John, in front applied skull and crossbones. On top an embossed rotating ball with circumference Arabic numerals and an arrow-shaped, fixed hand. Movm.: solid firegilt brass full plate movement with applied pierced and engraved ornaments, master hallmark "NS", baluster-shaped movement pillars, brass train, 2 barrels, one of them florally engraved; blued stackfreed, inner teeth locking disc with engraved decorations, verge escapement, pierced and florally engraved balance cock.

Nikolaus Schmidt the Younger
Nikolaus Schmidt was born in 1582. He was the son of Nicolaus Schmidt the Elder and was master in Augsburg in 1620. His watches were signed "NS" or "Nikolaus Schmidt der Junger". He died before 1637.
