C. Marcks & Co. Ltd., Bombay & Poona / attributed to Louis Audemars á Brassus, Case No. 2296, 53 mm, 152 g, circa 1880
A gentleman's extremely rare, very fine, astronomical minute repeating pocket watch with full calendar, moon phase, centre seconds, additional stoppable centre seconds and thermometer - made for the Indian market Case: 18k gold, engine-turned, à goutte, signed gold dome, slide for repeating mechanism, case maker's punch mark "AM". Dial: enamel, radial Roman hours, day, date and month indicator, cobalt blue enamelled golden moon phase disc with golden moon and stars, retrograde moon age indicator, retrograde indications for temperature in Reaumur: 8°R =10°C, gold spade hands. Movm.: bridge movement, frosted, gilt, 2 hammers / 2 gongs, wolfteeth winding wheels, pink gold train, gold screw compensation balance, counterpoised lever.
Audemars himself developed the design of the centre seconds with a rattrapante mechanism fitted beneath the dial, so there is no doubt that this watch was created in his workshops. Pressing the pusher once stops the rattrapante hand; it is rejoined with the centre seconds hand by a second pressing (no return to zero). The small depression in the middle of the repeater slider, the design of the dial and the movement, the Reaumur thermometer and the exposed hand-setting buttons were all distinguishing features of Louis Audemars’ work.
