A very fine, rare diamond and split pearl-set gold enamel verge pocket watch "Ceres" - with a matching gold enamel chatelaine and original fitted case
Case: protective case - copper, gilt, glazed on one side. Inner case - gold enamel, engraved band, the bezels set with split-pearls, the back with a finely painted on enamel figure of the goddess Ceres holding a cornucopia in a classical landscape against an engine-turned and translucent cobalt blue enamelled ground; lozenge shaped border outlined in white and translucent blue enamel, gold surround with fine white champlevé enamel birds, foliage and cornucopiae, decorated with diamond-set translucent blue and red enamel flowers; case maker's punch mark "JAB". Chatelaine: three strand links, the outer two decorated with blue and white champlevé enamel flowers, the links in the centre with engraved gold flowerheads; two navette-shaped gold medallions ornamented with fine white champlevé enamel flowers, the larger panel with a putto scene, framed by translucent blue enamel borders and half pearls, two pearl and gold wire tassels and a watch key. Dial: enamel, Arabic numerals, pierced gold hands. Movm.: full plate movement, keywind, gilt, chain/fusee, solid circular movement pillars, three-arm brass balance, florally engraved, pierced balance cock.
This watch and chatelaine has survived in extremely good condition thanks to the survival of the outer protective case for the watch and the fitted case.
In ancient Roman religion, Ceres was a goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships. She was the daughter of Saturnus and Ops. The Romans saw her as the counterpart of the Greek goddess Demeter.
