Bernd Schaarschmidt writes on the history of the Glashuette watch industry: "Johannes Duerrstein (1845-1901) had the first German exclusive rights to sell Lange watches from 1874 on. His efforts focussed on pocket watches with modern cases and decorations that met the taste prevailing taste of the time. - Very soon he asked his lifelong friend Prof. Karl Ludwig Theodor Graff, who was appointed director of the Institute of Applied Arts in Dresden (Dresdner Kunstgewerbeschule) in 1875, to create designs in this vein. From the 80s onwards, more and more ostentatious decorations were created, where the medaillon showed the image of the ancient Roman goddess Minerva, who had been worshipped as goddess of crafts, poetry and wisdom. Professor Graff then copyrighted his design which had won first prize in the Institute of Applied Arts' 1890 competition for the design and decoration of pocket watch cases. Initiator of the competition was once again J. Duerrstein."
