A gentleman's rare pocket watch of historic interest - "Doctor's Watch"
Case: 18k gold, very finely chased floral decoration with enamel inlays, engraving: "Avelino Gutiérrez", à goutte, signed gold dome with presentation engraving: "Al sabio mèdico y eximio caballero gratidud y carino los esposos Ortiz y San Pelayo, 15 Abril 1916-19". Dial: enamel, Arabic hours, pulsation scale, auxiliary seconds, 30 min. counter, blued spade hands. Movm.: 1/2 plate movement, rhodium plated, "fausses côtes" decoration, finest matted chronograph steel parts, ratchet wheel, gold screw compensation balance.

Felix Ortiz de San Pelayo (1857-1941)
Felix Ortiz de San Pelayo was a Basque composer who was born in 1857 in Azpeitía, Guipúzcoa; his father was a renowned physician. His goodfather José F. Aldahor was an organist and encouraged the boy’s musical talent. In 1872 Felix enrolled at the l'Escola Nacional de Música, two years later he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris. In 1879 he was awarded a first prize for his musical harmonies.
Felix Ortiz de San Pelayo emigrated to Argentina and in 1886 worked as a Professor of Music at the Jesuit University of Buenos Aires. He composed a number of pieces of music; his "Artzai Mutilla" (the brave) - the only opera in the Basque language - premiered 1900 at the Teatre de la Victòria.
