Mathey-Tissot was a Swiss watchmaker of prestige watches, originally established in the late 19th century by Edmond Mathey-Tissot at Les Ponts-de-Martel in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Mathey-Tissot were working mostly for large, famous companies. For instance, in the Cartier private museum there is a travelling clock bought from Cartier by Duchess of Windsor with eight-day movement by Mathey-Tissot (Cartier inv. No. CT 21 C40). Mathey-Tissot is not associated with the Swiss watchmaker Tissot.

Landscape painting has been an important element of Chinese culture for centuries. The Chinese feel that a landscape painting must reach beyond reality to embody the internal essence of an object. A Chinese landscape artist must have capability to understand the nature in order to convey the mood and sentiments. A peaceful river flowing through majestic mountains, as in this clock, is one of the favorite subjects of Chinese landscape art symbolizing the strength but also the peace.

The clock is the essence of this philosophy conveying the strength, peace, and good luck.
