Makers' Mark "GL", 24 x 57 x 44 mm, circa 1785
A very fine and rare Louis XVI gold enamel box "boîte à mouche"
Case: gold, case maker's punch mark "GL", charge and discharge marks of Henri Clavel (1783-1789), guild punch mark of 1785.
Of rectangular form, all-over engine-turned decoration with translucent salmon pink enamelling. The cover, sides and hinged base with panels enamelled with winter branches painted in brown; the cover and the base with oval medallions painted with fishermen at an alpine lake, within chased sablé borders with translucent green, red and blue and opaque white enamel flowers and tendrils. The interior fitted with two rectangular similarly enamelled hinged compartments, the base set with a mirror.
