David Hubert, London, Movement No. 1432, Case No. 1432, 43 mm, 98 g, circa 1730

A very fine Repoussé double cased verge pocket watch with quarter repeater "Allegory of Maritime Trade - Neptune and Mercury"
Case: outer case - gold, Repoussé decoration: allegory of maritime trade with Neptune, god of the sea with his trident, sitting in a large shell drawn by hippocampi. He is accompanied by Mercury, god of trade with his winged hat and herald’s staff. Four symmetrically arranged cartouches with chased figural representations of the four seasons; open work bezel with floral ornamentation, large outer hinge. Inner case - gold, around the edge open work decoration with engraved mythical creatures, imaginary birds, flowers and scrolls. Cartouche with engraved view of a town; rear bell, signed and numbered dust cover. Dial: enamel, radial Roman hours, signed, paste-set Louis XV hands. Movm.: fine full plate movement, keywind, applied engraved ornaments, signed, chain/fusee, 2 hammers, baluster movement pillars, three-arm brass balance, pierced engraved balance cock with shell decor, chatoned diamond endstone on balance.

Baillie's "Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World" David Hubert is recorded as an impoertant watchmaker working in London around 1714-1748. In 1743 Hubert became a master of the Company of Clockmakers; he was succeeded by Joseph Barnes in circa 1747.
