A triple-cased verge pocket watch with tortoiseshell outer case and stud decoration made for the Ottoman market Case: transport case - silver, tortoiseshell-covered, stud decoration, large lateral hinge. Outer case - silver, tiered, large lateral hinge. Inner case - silver, polished, case makers punch mark "IR" (James Richards, London). Dial: enamel, radial Ottoman numerals and minutes, signed, blued hands. Movm.: full plate movement, gilt, signed, florally engraved, chain/fusee, pierced movement pillars, three-arm steel balance, very finely pierced and florally engraved balance cock with vase décor, the open-work forms a "GP", which are the initials of George Prior.
George Prior Son of John Prior of Nessfield, also a clock-maker, was a leading London maker of watches for the Turkish and Islamic markets, in association with Edward Prior, who was perhaps his brother. One two occasions he received an award from the Society of Arts for his productions.
