Denis Martinot à Paris, 160 x 85 mm, circa 1620
A horizontal single-hand table clock with hour self strike of museum quality with florally engraved original winding key
Case: brass, firegilt, base plate with mouldings; polished sides, the top part with surrounding open work and engraved floral and foliage decor. Dial: brass, firegilt, engraved chapter ring with inlaid radial Roman hours I-XII, centre with elaborate engraved foliate pattern: lillies and strawberry flowers, finely decorated single iron hand. Movm.: circular brass full plate movement, firegilt, signed, screwed on floral decorations, gut/fusee, verge escapement, 1 hammer, missing bell, florally engraved barrel, baluster pillars, brass going train, florally engraved locking plate, steel ring balance, florally engraved and pierced balance cock.
Denis Martinot
Denis Martinot was the son of famous clockmaker Gilbert Martinot and inherited the title of town clockmaker of Paris from his father in 1581. He worked for the French King and for the valet de chambre and was appointed "Gros Orloge du Palays". Martinot died in 1631.
A few of his pieces are today in important museums such as the Louvre and in private collections such as the former Marfels collection.
