Fladgate & Willder, London

, Movement No. 1161, 49 mm, 122 g, circa 1760

A pair-cased half quarter repeating pocket watch with early cylinder escapement


Case: outer case - gold, the back side decorated with an engraving of a vase, à goutte, case maker punch mark "HT" (Henry Cleaver Taylor), large lateral hinge. Inner case - gold, the back side decorated with an engraving of a bouquet of flowers, around the edge open work decoration with engraved scrolls. Two Cartouches with engraved mascaron and view of a town; rear bell, signed and numbered dust cover. Dial: enamel, radial Roman hours, gold "Poker & Beetle" hands. Movm.: full plate movement, firegilt, applied florally engraved ornaments, signed, chain/fusee, three-arm steel balance, very finely engraved pierced balance cock, large chatoned diamond endstone on balance.

John Fladgate
John Fladgate was an English clockmaker probably born around 1720. He finished his apprenticeship in 1743 and became a member of the Clockmakers‘ Company. His workshop was in Conduit Street;Richard Willder was a partner in the business until 1785. Fladgate himself died in 1781 but his widow continued the business until 1793. A wall clock and a pocketwatch by Fladgate are part of the British Museum collection.
