John Taylor "Sole Maker", 36 Drake St, Rochdale, Movement No. 39736, Case No. 39736, 58 mm, 189 g, circa 1913
A rare semiquaver "Seconde foudroyante" stop watch, "Williams Patent No. 4762"
Case: silver, tiered, polished, case maker's punch mark "W.B.", stop lever at "2". Dial: enamel, off-white, radial Arabic numerals, auxiliary seconds, outer Arabic seconds divided into 1/16ths, signed, blued spade hands. Movm.: 3/4 plate movement, frosted, gilt, signed, screwed chatons, hand setting via a key, three-arm ring balance.
William Williams of Bury
On March 26, 1890 William Williams of Bury received a patent for an escapement that "beats 10, 12 or 16 times per second". Williams achieved this by adding an extra wheel in the train and placing the escapement wheel next to the seconds hand. He also used a particularly fast balance that was capable of 57,600 beats per hour.
