Lot No. 456* (92nd Auction)
Rolex "Princess", Case No. 9940, Ref. 1591, 11 x 26 mm, circa 1925

A lady's elegant, extremely rare wristwatch set with diamonds, sold by Boseck's Jewellers, Calcutta & Darjeeling
Case: 18k white gold, push back. Dial: black, luminous indexes/Arabic 12, signed, leaf hands. Movm.: rectangular movement, rhodium-plated, ground, 6 adj., 17 jewels, quality "ROLEX PRINCESS", screw compensation balance.

Over the years, only a few copies of this miniature version of the original Rolex "Prince" gentleman’s wristwatch have come up for auction as a lady’s wristwatch named "Princess". Obviously only a very small number of these models were ever produced.

Boseck's Calcutta & Darjeeling
The Boseck Calcutta & Darjeeling company was founded by John Boseck; records show that he exhibited gold, silver, and amber jewellery at the 1883/84 Calcutta International Exhibition. Boseck died in Calcutta on January 24, 1899.
In December 1909 J. Boseck & Co. registered their trademark at the Birmingham Assay Office.
Around 1917 Herbert Webb was manager of the Darjeeling branch, while his brother Murray worked at the Calcutta branch. J. Boseck & Co. presented an Oyster Perpetual Rolex watch to Sir Edmund Hillary after his successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953; the watch bore the inscription "To Sir E. Hillary From Bosecks Calcutta".
