Ralph Gout,, London, Height 770 mm

, circa 1790

An impressive George III. bracket clock with carillon quarter hour strike, quarter repeater and date, produced for the Ottoman market


Case: veneered and polished mahogany, gilt brass fittings. High rectangular arched case, four brass volute and foliage feet; front with chamfered edges, decorated with applied flower garlands and caryatids; open work sides decorated with chased and engraved foliage and lined with red fabric, arched moulded cornice, open work front with trellis and lined with red fabric, corners crowned with pine cones with crescents on top; square open work pediment decorated with trellis, with concave top and pine cones with crescents. Front and back with glass panels, brass handles on the sides. Dial: silver, applied chased and gilt foliate decor, silver hour dial with inlaid Ottoman numerals, signed, blued hands. Upper part decorated with engraved vase and half-moon decor; two applied silver discs: date on the left with inlaid Ottoman numerals, "Strike/Silent" for stopping the striking mechanism on the right, blued hands. Movm.: rectangular brass full plate movement, florally engraved, signed, 3 x gut/fusee for striking trains and going train, verge escapement, 8 hammers/7 bells, additional bell and hammer for hour strike, short pendulum, string for repetition.

Ralph Gout (circa 1770-1836)
Ralph Gout is a native of Switzerland. He was an important watch and clock maker in London. Bankrupt in 1796 when his stock included many watches for Spanish and Indian markets and pedometer watches.
