George Graham, London, "The Abercorn Graham"

, Movement No. 644, Height 2310 mm, circa 1724

An important, in museum quality English long case clock with 8-day power reserve, hour strike and date from the property of the Duke of Abercorn

Case: walnut, the front door's edge three times punched with the number 644. Dial: silvered chapter rings on gilt-brass plate, twice signed "Geo: Graham, London", the corners with applied foliate and indian masks, two winding holes with bolt and shutter. Movm.: solid rectangular brass plate movement, numbered, lever escapement, brass pendulum rod and brass bob, pendulum spring suspension.

Several inscriptions can be seen on the inner front door that refer to regulation of the clock; they date back to 1724 and 1725, the words, however, are almost illegible. The magnificent long case is more than two metres high and in the same outstanding condition as the dial and the movement.

Consigned by the Marquess of Hamilton, this watch was auctioned at Christie's in London in summer 1979. It was acquired by a German collector and has been in his property ever since.

The hereditary title Duke of Abercorn – named after Abercorn in Scotland – was created in the Peerage of Ireland and is used by the head of the Irish branch of the Scottish Hamilton family.

George Graham (1673-1751) began his apprenticeship with Henry Aske in 1688, who he stayed with even after being admitted to the Freedom of the Clockmakers Company. From 1695 to 1711 Graham worked for Thomas Tompion; Graham and Tompion then became partners and after Tompions death Graham continued the business in London's Fleet Street as his successor. One of England's most eminent clockmakers, Graham was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1721, a Member of the Council in 1722, and finally became Master of the Clockmakers Company. His greatest achievements were the deadbeat escapement in 1715, the mercury pendulum in 1726, and in 1725 his enhancements to the cylinder escapement which gave it its present form.
