An exquisite and extremely rare gold enamel snuff box "Sleeping Venus" Case: 14k rose gold, master’s mark "IGR&C" (Jean George Rémond & Compagnie à Genève), Russian guarantee mark for silver "56" and town mark for Saint Petersburg, initials "WG". Rectangular box with chamfered edges, base and sides with engine-turned shell and lozenge pattern and translucent cobalt blue and opaque black enamelling. Edges and framework of the base are decorated with Champlevé enamelling. The hinged lid has an octagonal enamel plaque: very fine miniature painting of the sleeping Venus, inside a floral gold frame and applied gold ornamentation: above the painting two putti with flaming torches, below a garland of flowers.
Jean George Rémond Jean George Rémond was a goldsmith in Geneva and is recorded to have worked from 1783 until 1815 or 1820. He first used his masters mark in 1783, when he became a master on December 22. He presumably formed the company George Rémond & Cie. seven years later.
