H. R. Ekegrén made by Eduard Koehn Geneva, Switzerland
, Movement No. 85103, Case No. 85103, 46 mm, 76 g, circa 1920An elegant and thin Swiss precision pocket watch with power reserve for the American market - delivered to J. E. Caldwell in Philadelphia
Case: 18k gold, polished, monogrammed. Dial: gilt. Movm.: bridge movement, 8 adj, gold screw compensation balance.
A master of his craft delivers a watch to one of the great companies in the trade: Eduard Koehn (1839-1908) worked his way up at Patek Philippe from watchmaker to director. He later bought the company H. R. Ekegrén and delivered many of his – usually ultraflat – watches to the United States. He was a supplier to Tiffany in New York but also to Caldwell in Philadelphia. James Emmot Caldwell (1813-1881) had established his business in 1839, the year when Koehn was born. The company still exists and is a major jewellery retailer.
This watch is a wonderful example of top quality craftsmanship; especially striking are the bluish sapphire jewels in the movement, which were presumably inspired by the exquisite limited edition model 'Blue Saphire', created by renowned maker Edward Howard in Boston, Massachusetts.
