Charles Frodsham, 84 Strand London

, Movement No. 3104, 175 x 190 x 175 mm, circa 1858

An English ship's chronometer with 56h power reserve indication

Case: mahogany box. Dial: silvered. Movm.: brass movement, chain/fusee, spring detent escapement, heavy chronometer balance with 2 weights and 4 screws, freesprung blued helical balance spring.

When admiring the technical perfection of the English marine chronometers – especially those created by the famous Charles Frodsham – we must not forget that the chronometers were in fact built to be used in the harsh environment of the sea. If these instruments have been serviced in a manner appropriate to their value, they usually still function perfectly today. The dial of chronometer no. 3104 shows its age in a little wear and tear; the silver is not new but reveals some of this timekeeper's long history through time.

Charles Frodsham (1810-1871) was a maker of very fine watches, originally of the Strand, London, and then New Bond Street. 1850 he bought J.R. Arnold's estate after his death; the firm was known for a short period as Arnold and Frodsham. He conducted many experiments with compensated balances and the balance spring to discover their underlying principles; he also wrote several papers on technical subjects.
