Francis Berthoud, London, Movement No. 19919, 140 mm, 1600 g, circa 1780
A rare, astronomical pair-cased quarter repeating coach clock with alarm
Case: outer case - wood/silver/ray skin. Inner case - brass, gilt, "repoussé" case depicting a galant scene, pierced, rear bell, movement protection cap. Dial: enamel. Movm.: full plate movement, chain/fusee, 3 barrels, 4 hammers, three-arm steel balance.
The back of this remarkable carriage clock shows a galant scene on a pond with a church and farm buildings executed in bas-relief. The case band is decorated with engraved tendrils, ribbons and stylised flower heads. The enamel dial has Roman hour numerals, an inner indication for the moon age where the hand is decorated with a crescent moon.
It is highly unusual to see a ray-skin-covered outer case in such perfect condition as this one.
