Fleurier 瑞士，63 mm，157 g，約 1840
Fleurier, Swiss, 63 mm, 157 g, circa 1840
A gentleman's rare gold enamel pocket watch of impressive size with enamelled "Flower Bouquet" and jumping centre seconds produced for the Chinese market
Case: 18k gold, the back cover with a polychrome painted enamel medallion. Dial: enamel. Movm.: bridge movement, keywind, Chinese duplex escapement, monometallic balance with blued steel weights.
This pocket watch impresses because of its extraordinary size and condition. The exquisite enamel medallion on the back is of supreme quality and shows a finely painted pair of doves in a nest of roses, tulips, peonies and daisies, sunflowers, trumpet vines, violets and marigolds. The case band and the blow are decorated with Champlevé enamel geometric pattern in opaque green and blue hues.
Amongst the European makers of pocket watches who produced watches for the Chinese market, Ilbery in London and Bovet and Vaucher in Fleurier were the most renowned companies. They had branches in China and exported the movements and the wonderful enamelwork for the timepieces from Switzerland to China. The lavishly ornamented cases always had very distinctive decorations; the motifs were usually taken from nature and have lost nothing of their appeal 200 years later – they are still highly sought-after collector’s pieces. Only very few of these enamel ornaments have survived the years undamaged – this makes a watch in its original condition like this one even more precious.
