Roman Melly & Roux, Movement No. 8345, Case No. 8345, 46 mm, 50 g, circa 1810
A flat Southern German gold enamel pocket watch with a rare virgule escapement, decorated with figural motifs
Case: 18k pink gold. Dial: enamel. Movm.: flat full plate movement, keywind, chain/fusee, large three-arm brass balance.
This pocket watch has a finely painted enamel medallion with a gold paillon border on its back: Venus and Adonis with a small putto on a lawn, on cobalt blue enamel ground. The upper part is decorated with an oval medallion under a baldachin: portrait of a lady in a low-cut contemporary dress. The edges on front and back are decorated with double rows of half pearls.
Roman, Melly & Roux were a German watch manufactory with Swiss origins from Geneva. After 1778 the company was based in Constance. Ami Melly was company director from 1778 to 1785; his successor was François Roman. Amed Roux was managing director and the company was renamed to Roman, Melly, Roux & Cie.
