French, Case No. 11730, 48 mm, 71 g, circa 1880

An exquisite diamond-set gold enamel hunting case pocket watch of royal provenance with corresponding diamond-set chain - presentation watch from Prince Frederik of the Netherlands to Johan Wilhelm Schuurman
Case: gold enamel, set with diamonds. Dial: two-tone silvered. Movm.: bridge movement, keywind, cylinder escapement, three-arm brass balance.

The lovingly finished case is decorated with engine-turned pattern and translucent light blue enamelling. The rim of the lid is studded with a row of large old European cut diamonds, the centre is ornamented with applied diamond-studded latticework, a basket full of flowers and a laurel wreath. The matching chain has seven lancet-shaped gold enamel pallets and is studded with diamonds.

Inside the lid is an engraved dedication: "1838-1885 Aan J. W. Schuurman Ter Herinnering Aangeboden Door Z. K. H. Prins Frederik der Niederlanden". The watch was given to Johan Wilhelm Schuurman by Prince Frederick of the Netherlands, son of King William I of the Netherlands. Schuurman was a councillor at the High Court at The Hague from 1872 to 1883.
