Abercrombie & Fitch Co. / Heuer, Swiss, "Seafarer", Movement No. 452242, Case No. 71706, Ref. 2443, Cal. Val. 72, 38 mm, circa 1960
A rare Heuer vintage wristband chronograph with tide indication and regatta countdown and "tropical dial" - reference 2443 second execution
Case: steel, screw back. Dial: silvered.
The companies Heuer and Abercrombie & Fitch had a very strong and personal relationship that had its roots in Jack Heuer’s work placement in New York with Abercrombie & Fitch’s watch department. At the beginning of his time with Abercrombie & Fitch, Jack Heuer stayed with Walter Haynes, who was chairman of the company at the time. Soon afterwards Heuer began producing watches for Abercrombie & Fitch which the company sold in their New York branches. Two of those models were the "Solunar" and the "Seafarer".
The "Seafarer" model was launched on the market in the early 1950s and the production ran for two decades, during which a number of small modifications in the design were made. There are no exact figures to tell us how many of these timepieces were produced and sold. Typical features of the "Seafarer" are the vibrant colours of the dial with green and yellow accents and the gilt Arabic numerals and dot indexes.
This wrist chronograph is the 2nd execution of reference 2443. It features a smaller hour counter than the earlier reference 346 and gold-set numerals and indexes. The case is unpolished and the previously white dial has gently aged to an attractive hue of turquoise and maroon.
