Tilmann von dem Knesebeck, Leipzig, Movement No. 0, 200 mm, circa 1973
A fine spring detent escapement model with flying tourbillon according to Alfred Helwig, Glashuette
Case: wood, glass dome. Movm.: brass plate, gilt, screw compensation balance.
Tilmann von dem Knesebeck was born in Rostock in the early 1940 and started school in 1949. In 1957 he began his engineering apprenticeship, after which he continued his training to become a master craftsman and engineer. He went to university to acquire a degree and then devoted himself to science and research. Von dem Knesebeck had started collecting high-quality watches early in life and soon took an interest in the design and the construction of these timepieces. As early as 1978 von dem Knesebeck developed an escapement model of a tourbillon, which he would later base his work on.
Taking his inspiration from a friend and collector who also happened to be an excellent watchmaker, von dem Knesebeck started working on a tourbillon for pocket watches two years later, producing two examples. Even then he strictly followed the quality standards set in Glashütte and created every single piece of his constructions by hand. The chronometer hairspring was always a fundamental element in his designs.
Tilmann von dem Knesebeck explained the development of his model – which was based on Alfred Helwig’s design - in an article in Klassik Uhren Magazin (2/2004).
