Rolex "Oyster Perpetual DAY-DATE Superlative Chronometer officially certified", Movement No. 1794055, Case No. 9823628, Ref. 18168, Cal. 3055, 36 mm, circa 1986
A gentleman’s sophisticated automatic wristwatch in practically new condition with date and German weekday indicator, centre seconds and rare dark blue sodalite dial with applied gold Roman numerals; the bezel is set with baguette-cut brilliants - with original Rolex leather box
Case: 18k gold, screw back ref. 18000, screwed "Twinlock" winding crown, 18k "President"-gold bracelet ref. 8385. Dial: sodalite. Movm.: rotorwind movement, Glucydur balance.
The Oyster Perpetual Day-Date was launched in 1956, the first wristwatch to show the date and the day of the week in full in a window on the dial. The first models were available either in 18k gold or in platinum. The president bracelet was created specially for the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date at the time. This exclusive model is still the Rolex of choice for the wealthy and influential watch lover.
Rolex experimented with a variety of different hard-stone materials for the Day-Date dials - the watch we have here is fitted with a fine sodalite dial and constitutes a marvellous example of that impeccable elegance Rolex was aiming for in their attempt to create a watch of perfect beauty.
The bezel studded with 24 baguette-cut diamonds is incredibly striking. The German day indication as well as the date are set in gold and enhance the harmony of the dial, which also features applied gold Roman hour indexes – a remarkable combination, because they are not known to have ever been used with a hard-stone dial.
Due to the extravagant price of the model only very few examples of this 'high end' Day-Date were ever produced and sold.
