As soon as wristwatches had established themselves during the time of the first World War, the designers broke with the traditions which had dominated the shape of the watches in the 19th century. One of the most pleasant designs in the 1920s was the tonneau-shaped case; round watches came back into favour only during the 1940s. The tonneau-shaped watch Patek Philippe produced as a new edition of an extraordinary movement combines a digital hour indication with a directly driven minute hand. Only 500 models of this watch were made - 450 in red gold and 50 in platinum.
