Patek Philippe & Cie. Genève, "Chronometro Gondolo", Movement No. 151123, Case No. 256813, 32 mm, 28 g, circa 1910
A small and lavishly hand-engraved Geneva pocket watch in practically new condition - delivered to Gondolo & Labouriau Relojoeiros Rio de Janeiro - gold watch chain with South-African 2 Rand gold coin
Case: 18k gold, monogrammed, finely chased. Dial: enamel. Movm.: bridge movement, gold screw compensation balance.
A typical feature of the watches produced for South American retailer Gondolo & Labouriau is their overlarge size. The conventional size for men’s watches is 56 mm. Lady’s mall size watches such as this one are virtually unknown.
Even the small movements of Patek Philippe’s extremely successful Gondolo range – which were used almost exclusively for ladies’ watches and later for wristwatches – possessed all the typical features of the large pocket watch movements such as the cam type fine adjusting device, the wolf tooth winding wheels or the "Moustache" counterpoised lever. The movement sits in a marvellously chased case which comes with a chain that holds a pendant with a South African gold coin. The coin was issued in 1962 and shows the springbok on its back just like the legendary Krugerrand introduced a few years later. The front presents a portrait of Jan van Riebeeck, the founder of the Dutch Cape Colony; the portrait is surrounded by the inscription "United We Stand Strong" in English and Afrikaans.
