Lot 368

Swiss, Case No. 8830, 51 mm, 89 g, circa 1890
A gold pocket watch with charming "en grisaille" enamel dial and unusual patented crown winding system as invented by Olivier Courvoisier of Neuchâtel
Case: 18k gold, engine-turned, monogrammed, glazed movement. Dial: enamel. Movm.: bridge movement, crown winding system according to the English patent no. 1114 from 1873, gold screw compensation balance.
The central dial is surrounded by three hovering, winged putti; the three figures have been painted in exquisite detail with some of those as well as the stars in the background emphasized in gold on a dark grey ground. The little angels symbolize winter, spring and autumn – summer is depicted as a garland of fruit near the lower edge of the dial.
The Museé d'Horlogerie in Geneva exhibits an ebauche with anchor escapement and the same type of winding system. It was developed by Oliver Courvoisier, who received the English patent no. 1114 in 1873 for it.
