David Du Chemin à Rouen, 34 mm, 42 g, circa 1650
A single-handed pre-balance spring pendant watch
Case: brass, firegilt, engraved, ring pendant. Dial: firegilt, engraved with flower decor, engraved hour chapter ring with Roman numerals, single blued hand. Movm.: full plate movement, firegilt, gut/fusee, applied blued pierced click work, verge escapement, plain two-arm steel balance without balance spring.
David Du Chemin was a watchmaker active in Rouen around 1650; unfortunately there is only very little information on this maker. He was a contemporary of Noël Hubert, Etienne Hubert, Timothé Hubert, Robert Hubert and Balthazar Martinot.
The database of the "Society of Antiquaries of Scotland", Vol. 3, 1857-1859, lists a melon-shaped gilt watch without balance spring or gut string made by David Du Chemin à Rouen on page 436 – it is quite possible that this entry refers to our timepiece. The watch was in the possession of the family of Scottish poet William Drummond of Hawthornden (1585-1649) for many years and is said to be the watch worn by the poet himself.
