Lot 9

F. Sudre À bourdeaux (à Bordeaux), 33 x 57 mm, 68 g, circa 1590
A remarkable, early and rare oval pre-balance spring pendant watch with one hand
Case: brass, gilt, glazed dial. Dial: gilt, engraved with motifs of birds, lilies and sunflowers. Silver chapter ring, applied hour knobs for time reading by night, engraved centre with a contemporary view of a town, presumably Bordeaux with the Tour Pey Berland and the Cathedral of Saint Andrew of Bordeaux. Movm.: firegilt brass full plate movement, gut/fusee, verge escapement, plain two-arm iron balance without balance spring.
The watch is fitted with a rare and unusual rectangular balance cock; this type was also used in another pendant watch by Gribelin à Blois, dating from 1588. Unfortunately there are no references anywhere to a watchmaker F. Sudre; Tarday, however, lists a Ramond Sudre of Bordeaux in 1567.
