Lot 4

"GC" (attributed to Carl Gutbub, Strasbourg), 127 mm, 2000 g, circa 1580
An important, one-handed splendour coach clock with hour self strike and alarm
Case: brass, firegilt, rear bell. Dial: silver. Movm.: full plate movement, firegilt, maker's mark and hallmark, 3 barrels, 1 hammer, verge escapement, locking plate, stackfreed to even out the changing torque of the mainspring, foliot and hog's bristle.
The back lid has an engraved coat of arms and is slightly domed; the openwork case band has a gentle bombé shape that is typical for the late 16th century. The dial is protected by a flower-like pierced cover with a crest in the centre; it has peripheral, engraved Roman hours with raised buttons for reading the time in the dark as well as an inner 12 hour display using Arabic numerals. The centre is exquisitely engraved with a leopard and a dog on the verge of a fight. A squirrel on a tree is about to drop an acorn on the head of the leopard. A high mountain with a castle is visible in the background.
Carl Gutbub (1550 ? - ?) was a watchmaker in Strasbourg, where he was given freedom of the city in 1571; it was he who - together with the Habrecht brothers - established the reputation of watchmaking in Strasbourg. Gutbub is known to have still been active in 1590.
