Bulova "Accutron Astronaut", Case No. B86394 M5, 38 mm, circa 1965
An aviator's rare vintage wristwatch with 24h indicator and electromechanical precision tuning fork movement
Case: steel, screw back, bidirectional rotating bezel with 24 hour division. Dial: black.
The fact that the Bulova Accutron models operated on electromechanical energy even in the early 1960s made them particularly suitable for the aviation and space industries.
The tuning form mechanism guaranteed unprecedented accuracy, which was readily accepted by private customers as well as in the fields of aviation and space flight. The most famous wearers of those timepieces were the pilots of rocket aircraft programme X-15. These hypersonic aircrafts reached top speeds of up to 7,200 km/h and were launched by B-52 Stratofortress mother ships.
The main differences between the "Accutron Astronaut" and other Accutron models are the 24-hour hand and the 24-hour bezel. Like all Accutron models fitted with the 214 movement, the Astronaut does not have a winding crown and is delivered with a recessed key next to the battery compartment on the back of the watch.
