A. Lange & Söhne Glashütte B/Dresden, Movement No. 15193, Case No. 15193, 55 mm, 161 g, circa 1882
An extremely rare Glashuette hunting quarter repeating pocket watch with date, with Lange extract from the archives - sold on 04/04/1882 for 1,068 Mark to Carl Friedrich Matthes, entrepreneur and member of the Saxon State Parliament
Case: 18k pink gold, monogrammed. Dial: enamel. Movm.: 3/4 plate movement, 2 hammers / 2 gongs, gold screw compensation balance.
Martin Huber’s book "Die Lange Liste" lists only 22 pocket watches with quarter repeaters and date created by Lange & Söhne. This makes the timepiece a true rarity and a precious collector’s piece, particularly as it is in such immaculate condition.
There is also an interesting historical background to the watch – the monogram C. F. M. refers to the entrepreneur Carl (Karl) Friedrich Matthes, who was born in 1829 in Schönbach in Saxonia and died there in 1904. From 1877 until his death Matthes was a member of the 2nd chamber of the state parliament of Saxonia; as a land and factory owner he was a driving force behind the installation of the 12 km light railway between Taubenheim and Dürrhennersdorf, which transported not only people but also goods and raw materials.
